WICHITA, KS -- Day three of the NBC Midwest Regional at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, in Wichita, Kansas, featured four elimination games with one-hundred plus degree heat.
In the 10am game the Hutchinson Monarchs sqaured off against the Newton Rebels. Hutchinson came away victorious with a 10-0 five-inning run rule. Monarchs catcher Jacob McNamara was 3-for-3 with 2 RBI, while Aaron Stubblefield was 2-for-3. Hutchinson advances in the loser's bracket to play at 1pm on Monday, Newton is now eliminated.
Game two proved to be all the Wichita Wheatkings as they held a 6-0 lead after the top of the 8th and went on to win 8-3. Wheatkings right fielder Josh King lead the way going 3-for-5 including a triple and 2 RBI. With the win the Wheatkings advance in the losers bracket to take on Hutchinson, Monday at 1pm, in a battle of two Walter Johnson League teams while the Sun Devils are eliminated.
In the third elimination game of the day Lindsborg jumped on top with a three-run second only for their lead to be cut to one in the bottom half. Salina then scored one in the fourth and three in the fifth and never looked back on the way to a 9-6 victory. The Blue Jays were led by Mitch Meyer, Scott Sammons, Brian Sipe and Adam Sonabend that all went 2-for-3. Sammons also drove in three runs. The Salina Blue Jays advance to Monday's 10am loser's bracket game and the Lindsborg Knights are now eliminated.
The night cap paired two more teams from the Walter Johnson League with the Valley Center Diamond Dawgs and Kansas Cannons. The Cannons scored three in the second which was all they needed to knock the Walter Johnson League regular season Champions out of the NBC Midwest Regional. Tory Stoffregen's 2-for-4 performance and pitcher Ryan Scoles seven-innings of work giving up just four hits and one run led the Cannons to the 4-1 win. Valley Center is now eliminated but will still compete in the BaseballSavings.com 77th Annual NBC World Series after earning the Walter Johnson League berth. The Cannons move advance in the loser's bracket and will face the Salina Blue Jays on Monday at 10am.
